Early Warning Signs of an unhealthy partner or toxic relationship

In a new relationship it’s important to be aware of any red flags that may indicate a toxic or unhealthy partnership dynamic. Here are some early warning signs that should not be ignored.

  1. Love bombing: love bombing is when a partner comes on too strong with excessive attention, praise and affection. It can be signs of emotional manipulation and should be watched for. Although attention, affection and praise can feel extremely good to our ego we must think logically. Have we earned such praise and reward? Does this person truly know you well enough to speak so highly or flattering of you?

  2. Subtle Coercion: Subtle coercion is when a partner begins to control and monitor your activities, disguising it as concerned for your safety. It is important to be aware of this early on as it can be a sign of abusive behavior or domestic violence.

  3. Hypersensitivity: hypersensitivity is when a partner is easily triggered by harmless comments or jokes. This can be a sign of an abusive personality and should be taken seriously.

  4. Disapproval of Friends: Disapproval of Friends can be a sign of controlling possessive behavior in an attempt to isolate you from your support system. It’s important to be aware of this early on in the relationship.

  5. rushing into commitment: rushing into commitment is when a partner pressured you into making important decisions such as meeting each other‘s families, making huge financial commitments, or moving in together. This can be a sign of unhealthy behavior and should be taken seriously.
